South Burlington, VT Troop 611 proudly announces that brothers Nicholas and Zachary Bushey, students at South Burlington High School, have earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in the Boy Scouts of America. On December 19, 2024, the two successfully completed their separate but simultaneous Boards of Review at the Green Mountain Council headquarters in Waterbury, Vermont, receiving the news together, capping years of work and dedication.
Since beginning their Scouting career in the spring of 2019, Nicholas and Zachary have embraced every adventure with enthusiasm and determination. They have honed their skills at summer camps across Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. They also embarked on a high-adventure expedition that included a rigorous 10-day trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. During the 17-day expedition, the boys went up Pike's Peak, whitewater rafted, ascended Mount Phillips (which rises over 14,000 feet), and took on climbing to the top of the challenging mountain that looks over the base camp called Tooth of Time. These experiences have only deepened their love for the outdoors.
Nicholas spearheaded an Eagle project that exemplified community service and innovation. His project involved constructing a walking path connecting Ascension Lutheran Church and the Ready Crematorium on Allen Road to help alleviate overflow parking issues. Completed during the summer of 2024, Nicholas worked diligently to raise the necessary funds by organizing dinners, soliciting donations, and securing equipment contributions from local businesses.
In a complementary display of leadership and community commitment, Zachary led an Eagle project aimed at enhancing the local youth lacrosse program. His project focused on revamping the South Burlington Youth Lacrosse trailer, where he organized a complete rebuild of the inside and cleanup of the outside. Zachary designed dedicated spaces for all the necessary equipment and purchased new gear including sticks, helmets, gloves, and shoulder pads to help local youth try lacrosse. He also oversaw mechanical maintenance and exterior improvements to ensure the trailer was fully operational ahead of the 2025 lacrosse season.
An Eagle Scout project is a leadership-driven service effort where a Scout plans, fundraises, and guides volunteers to complete a meaningful community project. It builds project management, teamwork, and communication skills while making a lasting impact.
The two Bushey boys will celebrate their remarkable achievements with a court of honor, where family, friends, and fellow Scouts will join in recognizing their hard work and dedication this coming March 8, 2025.
