For three years running each snow-covered December, the Rotary Club of South Burlington has held the ever-popular ‘Ugly Sweater Fun Run & Walk’.  Participants of all ages gathered to show off their “Ugly” holiday-themed sweaters, which provided both warmth and laughter.  Our community came together to enjoy a chilly run and walk through South Burlington; hot food donated by local businesses; a social taste of the holiday spirit; and, especially, the smiles on the faces of both young and “older” participants.
In 2019, the money raised went to support the South Burlington Academic Boosters Fund, as well as South Burlington Rotary Charities.  This year, however, our community has faced the specter of the Covid-19 pandemic.   The Rotary Club of South Burlington believes hosting the in-person, seasonal celebration with almost two hundred participants and volunteers will be too difficult and potentially unsafe.
Hang the “Ugly” sweaters in the closet and put on the “Ugly” mask!
The Rotary Club of South Burlington will be holding an ‘Ugly Mask Competition’!  “Ugly mask” as in the now-common face mask, which we all have become accustomed to wearing to stay healthy.  Since face masks were first introduced this year people have been sewing and stitching their own unique designs to show off.  Like the “ugly sweaters” people wear for fun and pleasure during the winter, the Rotary Club of South Burlington is putting out the challenge to locals to take a picture of their very own “ugly” face masks (which can be beautiful, too) and enter our contest in one of three categories: 1) Elementary School age; 2) Middle and High School age; and 3) Adult.  A committee of face mask connoisseurs will judge the 5 best – ahem, “ugliest” – masks and then open it up for a public final vote to determine the winners.
