South Burlington Rotary Youth Exchange

The Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) has partnered with SBHS for many years.  The purpose of RYE is to present opportunities for high school students to advance their education, experience new cultures, learn another language and contribute to world understanding.  This is accomplished through experiences gained by attending school while living with host families in a different country. When participating in the exchange, students benefit from the sponsorship, supervision and support of the local host Rotary Club.

During this school year, the South Burlington Rotary is sponsoring two “outgoing” students from SBHS who are participating in the exchange in Slovakia and Chile.  Correspondingly, Rotary and SBHS are sponsoring two “incoming” students (a girl from Finland and a boy from Brazil).  These two students are currently placed with host families and having a wonderful experience.  The goal of Rotary, however, is to maximize exposure for RYE students to American culture through two or more host family experiences.  We are currently seeking additional host families for our student from Brazil, for the time period of December 27th to the end of the school year.  Gui is from the City of Francisco Beltraeo, Brazil.  He is years 16 years old and will turn 17 on March 20, 2013.  His home family consists of his mom & dad, as well as a 14 year old brother and a 5 year old sister, so he is used to siblings. Gui's English is good and he participated in Soccer (JV) at SBHS in the Fall.  He has recently expressed an interest in joining the snowboarding club for the winter.

Please consider sharing your world and the experiences that this bright, energetic and wonderful young person is bringing into our community so that your life and that of your children may also benefit from participating in the RYE experience.  If interested in becoming a host family or to learn more about Gui, please, contact former Superintendent of Schools and Rotarian Bruce Chattman by email (brucechattman@comcast.net) or telephone (863-5325).
